QMS Development for Supplier is not a new requirement, but it has made this requirements more extensive and stringent. In the ISO/TS 16949, we shall develop our main suppliers to be ISO 9001 certified, and to obtain this International Automotive QMS Standard as the final goal.  In new standard, IATF has outlined the 5 process steps to lead the suppliers to gear towards the certification of IATF 16949:2016 eventually.

So, what are the 5 process steps of IATF 16949:2016 certification for our suppliers ?
For suppliers without ISO 9001:2015, we shall play our role as per below :
•    Conduct 2nd Party Audit for Suppliers to be developed based on ISO 9001:2015 Standard.
•    Once they are ready, get them to be certified under the recognized Certification Body.

For suppliers with ISO 9001:2015, we shall play our role as per below:
•    Conduct 2nd Party Audit based on our Customer defined QMS requirements(CSR).
•    Conduct 2nd Party Audit based on IATF 16949:2016 Standard.
•    Once they are ready, get them to be certified under the IATF-recognized Certification Body.


So, what will be the impact to IATF Certified Organization ?
Firstly, we have suggested our clients that, they shall prepare to develop a Supplier Development Team (SDT) which consists of Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE), Purchasing Team, QA Team or whichever departmental personnel who are relevant.
Secondly, we have notified them that, to have qualified internal auditor may not be enough anymore. They shall also develop a team of competent 2nd Party Auditors who are really capable & can represent the organization to conduct 2nd party audit based on ISO 9001:2015 and/or IATF 16949:2016 standard requirements for suppliers.


One concern that most clients may consult us is, should we develop all the suppliers at one time ?

We have suggested them to focus on those suppliers that will directly contribute to the quality of thier product, as priority. If the number of suppliers are still too many to cover, we propose our clients to prioritize on those who have rooms for improvement, but can be developed, and would work hand-in-hand with them in long term.
